Vaso Cubrilovic is a Bosnian-Serb historian, writer, and academician, born on March 3, 1937, in Bosnia and Herzegovina. He graduated from the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Belgrade, where he defended his doctoral thesis in history.
Cubrilovic's main research focus is on the history of Bosnia and Herzegovina, particularly during the Ottoman period. He is known for his controversial position on the events that led to the outbreak of the Bosnian War in the 1990s. He argued that the war was provoked by the Muslims of Bosnia and Herzegovina, who sought to create a separate Islamic state on Serbian territory. This had been previously noted in his writings, including a book called "Bosanski Bogomili u prošlosti i sadašnjosti" (Bosnian Bogomils in the Past and Present).
Cubrilovic has published numerous books and articles in various national and international publications on topics related to Bosnian history, including the Ottoman Empire, the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and World War I. He has received several awards for his academic work, including the Order of the Yugoslav Flag and the Order of the Republic of Srpska.
Cubrilovic has been a member of various academic associations and serves on the editorial board of several academic journals. He was a professor at the Faculty of Philosophy in Banja Luka until his retirement in 2006.
